At least 260 first responders completed suicide in 2016, 260 families lost their loved ones. More than half of them are not publicly reported as suicides, the most common reason is the stigma attached to suicide. This is the same reason first responders are not seeking help. It’s time we stopped seeing it as a stigma and start recognizing emotional trauma as something that can be treated, not hidden. We need to acknowledge that a first responders job may be the cause of their suicide and start remembering them for the lives they lived. The letter below was written by the widow of a law enforcement officer who completed suicide in 2016. Please read it, share it and, most importantly, understand it.
